A high-altitude trek is not simply a longer trek. Above roughly 5,000 metres the walking gets slower, the recovery slower, and weather can close a route in an afternoon. These journeys are planned as expeditions rather than as holidays.

What changes at altitude

  • Progress is slower. A day that feels like four hours at sea level can take much longer.
  • Sleep is disturbed more often, and appetite changes.
  • The weather window is narrower, and a storm can mean a rest day whether you planned one or not.
  • Acclimatisation has to be built into the schedule rather than added to it.

None of this makes these routes unapproachable, but it does mean they need preparation. Read Altitude and Acclimatization before you commit.

Who these suits

Trekkers with previous multi-week trekking experience, or mountaineers moving from climbing into high trekking. If that is not you yet, the Trekking and Adventure page has the easier routes, and starting there is normal rather than a step backwards.
