Travel insurance is the item most often discovered to be inadequate after booking rather than before. This page is about what to check, not about which policy to buy.

Check the altitude limit first

Standard travel insurance commonly stops well below the altitudes reached on a Karakoram trek. A policy that is generous at 3,000 metres may exclude the exact camp you are sleeping in at 5,000. Check the stated maximum altitude against your itinerary, not against your itinerary in general.

Check what is actually covered

  • Helicopter evacuation: in these ranges it is the standard means of getting a sick or injured climber down. Confirm the cover and the process, and ask what documentation the insurer needs.
  • Search and rescue: sometimes separate from evacuation. Ask about both.
  • Repatriation: medical evacuation home after treatment is a different clause again.
  • Trip cancellation: relevant because mountain seasons close. Check the terms about weather and permit-related changes.
  • Medical treatment and hospital costs before repatriation, which in Pakistan are billed directly and can be substantial.

Points that catch travellers out

  • Activities: trekking, mountaineering and climbing often need to be declared explicitly.
  • Altitude: the limit is per policy and often differs from trekking to climbing cover.
  • Guided versus guided: some insurers treat climbing with a guide differently from independent climbing.
  • Exclusions: alcohol-related incidents, ignoring local advice, and unapproved activities.

When to buy

Once your trip is confirmed and before you make non-refundable commitments. Keep the policy number and the insurer emergency number with your trip documents, and send us a copy.

We cannot recommend or supply a specific policy, and we do not sell insurance. What we can do is tell you the altitude profile of your route so you can compare it against the wording.

Send the trip you are considering and we will describe the sleeping altitudes involved.
