Most difficult treks in Pakistan fail on preparation rather than on the mountain. This page is the preparation checklist we would work through with you before a departure.

1. Set the timing first

Choose the window before anything else. The season decides which routes are open, how long the drive takes, and how much margin you have for a rest day. Best Time to Visit Pakistan covers the main windows by region.

2. Build fitness for the altitude

  • Cardio work, several hours a week, in the months before departure. Days on the trail are long.
  • Load carrying practice, including with weight, so you know how your back and knees behave.
  • Hill and stair work. Trekking is vertical, and the descents are often harder on knees than the climbs.
  • If you have never trekked above 3,000 metres, consider an easier route first rather than testing this on a base camp.

The details on how the body responds to altitude are in Altitude and Acclimatization.

3. Documents and permits

Entry requirements for Pakistan are published separately and change, so read Pakistan Visa Information early. For the mountains themselves, permits are arranged by us as part of the expedition logistics; we will tell you what you need to carry and what we handle.

4. Insurance

Read Travel Insurance before you buy anything. High-altitude trekking and climbing are excluded by many standard policies, and the exclusion is the part that matters.

5. Gear

Work through Equipment and Packing once your route is confirmed, because the list changes with the altitude and the season rather than with the trip name.

6. The week before you fly

  • Confirm flights, transfers and arrival time with us in writing.
  • Check that your documents match the names on your booking exactly.
  • Carry cash for small expenses in the valleys, and keep a backup of key documents.
  • Send us a copy of your insurance certificate and emergency contact details.
