Trekking is the most common way visitors meet the mountains here, and it scales widely. Some of the journeys below start in a valley and walk gently upward; others go straight to a glacier base camp.
Distances on these routes are measured in walking hours, not kilometres, and they change with altitude, weather and the group. A normal trekking day includes a long walk, a tea or lunch stop on the route, and camp set up by the support team by the time you arrive.
Two pages do most of the work for trekkers: Equipment and Packing for the gear list, and Altitude and Acclimatization for what happens above 3,000 metres.
